With his commission to paint four walls of a Detroit Institute of Arts courtyard, Mexican artist Diego Rivera (1886-1957) created what he considered the best work of his career. After weeks of preparation at a Ford Motor Company plant, he created Detroit Industry(1932-1933), a twenty-seven panel tribute to the city&#;s manufacturing base and labor force, illustrating the manufacturing process from its roots in agriculture to the assembly of the finished product. The large central panel of the South Wall depicts the culmination of the automobile manufacturing process. In this detail, workers start the assembly process with the car's chassis. Controversial at the time of their completion, the murals have become an enduring symbol of the spirit of Detroit citizens. Reproduced from the original fresco panel.
