Wadsworth Jarrell: The Artist as Revolutionary

Wadsworth Jarrell: The Artist as Revolutionary

Robert L. Douglas

Wadsworth Jarrell has created a body of work that is astonishing both in its depth of narrative subject matter and in its breadth of visual excitement. He received his formal art education at the Art Institute of Chicago, but his vibrant style of painting grew directly from his immersion in and reaction to the civil rights movement and the liberation struggle of the 1960s.

In Wadsworth Jarrell: The Artist as Revolutionary, Robert L. Douglas explores the development of Jarrell’s career from his childhood to the present. Seventy full-color reproductions of Jarrell’s paintings are included, exemplifying the bright colors and shimmering compositions central to Jarrell’s style. These paintings of racing horses, street scenes, and musical groups are so alive that the sounds of thundering hooves and saxophone melodies seem to reverberate through Jarrell’s brush right into our very souls.

109 pages, 70 full color reproductions,  11" x 8½.”
